The first slot machine was created in 1897 by Charles Fey. One hundred years later, due to micro-computer technology applications, it has become the superstar of the casinos today.

To know your chances of hitting the slot machines jackpot, multiply these 20 symbols 3 times. You’ll get a combination of 8,000 combinations of these symbols. This means, you have 1 chance in 8,000 of winning when you push the spin button.
But the reality is the RNG of online slot machines are programmed to make 256 “virtual stops” for each of the three reels. So to know your odds of winning the slot machine jackpot, you’ll have to multiply 256 “virtual stops” three times. This means you’ll have 1 chance in 16, 777, 216 to win the jackpot.
This is a huge number of odds all slot machine players face. So now, you know why these machines are called one-armed bandits. Slot machines especially those with RNG, are programmed to win during the 82-98% of the times it’s played. This is also the reason why, casinos can give big paybacks. Because winning at a slot machine takes a long, long time to happen.
Yet despite the odds, if the player stays long enough at the slot machine, he or she will get a certain amount. How does this happen? All electronic slot machines are pre-programmed to give a specific amount of payback, and a hit frequency. This means, that it’s been programmed when to give and how much, at what rate.
How does the RNG do this? RNG programs of slot machines are created using the same mathematical formula, the algorithm, that video and poker games use. Algorithm is a fancy name, for a problem solving procedure that has a specific number of solutions or steps, to solve a specific problem.
The decision of programming the rate of the percentages of the pay out and the hit frequency are mostly performed at the factory level. This is also time when the game software is installed, and before the slot machine is placed on the floor.
RNG software is stored in EPROM. That’s short for erasable programmable read-only memory. This is a memory chip whose contents can be erased and reprogrammed when its’ exposed to ultraviolet light. So casino owners can reprogram the machine within legal limits.
If the slot machine’s RNG is not tampered with or there is no biased programming. One can say this RNG program truly generates random numbers, as promised.
